Back to the Eighties

St. Mary’s College went back to the eighties recently with a special event at the school devoted to the decade of Dallas and Depeche Mode.

The Friends of St. Mary’s - the organisation for former pupils, parents, governors and staff of the college - arranged the Eighties Night as its latest reunion evening.

Organisers said the aim of the event was to take guests back in time to an era when hairstyles were big and t-shirts were bold!

Highlights of the evening included a disco playing exclusively eighties music from old favourites like Adam Ant, Spandeau Ballet, the Eurythmics and Human League.

There was also a retro telly showing nostalgic TV clips, and a nostalgia tuck shop selling the classic sweets of the era.

And guests were invited to display their detailed knowledge of the decade by taking part in a trivia quiz which focused on everything from classic eighties toys like the Rubik’s Cube to iconic events like Live Aid.

Friends of St. Mary’s Chairman, Tony Bradshaw, commented: “This was another very successful event. Many people had taken the time and trouble to dress up in eighties style and this generated a lot of comments and plenty of laughs as well.

“All the money raised on the night will go towards our current appeal to replace the school minibuses,” added Mr Bradshaw.
