Check mate! Bootle's long-distance chess champion Gary Quillan finds distance no barrier when it comes to chalking up victories. The 17 year-old, from Joseph Lister Close, last week carried off the prestigious Colossus-Ceefa Trophy with a 300-mile victory by telephone over an opponent from Cornwall.  A win which means that Gary has won an Amstrad computer system for himself. and a word processor for the school - St Mary's College, Crosby.
