The debating team of St. Mary's College, Crosby, won the English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition national finals at York last Saturday. Members brought back the Lord Baillieu Trophy which they will hold for a year. The team has been successful in winning the Merseyside finals three times. but this is the first time that it has got into the national finals. The team – comprising Chairman. Gerard Anderson (centre); Speaker, Charles Dickinson (left); and Proposer of the Vote of Thanks. Kevin Ward - were each presented with £5 book tokens. Six other teams from other regions took part and the runner-up was the Francis Holland School from London. Judges for the competition were English Speaking Union representatives Graham P. C. Norton, Miss M. 6. Willoughby and Mr. Cohn Hampshaw.
