Three pupils from St. Mary's College, Crosby, have furthered the schools continual high standard in cross-country and marked their prowess in this field by qualifying for places in the Lanashire County teams. The County Championships, which resulted in the boys' selection, were held last month, when 2,600 schoolboys from all over Lancashire took part.
Barry Lyonette. 17, took second place against a 224-strong field to win his place in the senior team. Richard Kelly, facing the same number of competitors, raced home in seventh place to justify his selection for the intermediates. An outstanding performance was recorded by the third St. Mary's runner. Thomas Quinn, who, at 13, is still a year under age for the competition, when he came third in a field of 290 to gain his placing in the County junior squad.
The three runners will have another local boy with them on their trip to the All England Schools Cross-Country on March 21 at Blackburn, as Mick Collier of Waterloo Grammar was also selected as reserve in the intermediate class.
The St. Mary's teams came close to sweeping the board in another competition recently and two of the Lancashire representatives were featured in the success on that day. The match, the inter-schools meeting at Cheadle. Cheshire, was very competitive and the local school did well to win the under-12, under-14, and under-l6 events, with first places by their runners in each race.
