1967 - St. Mary's complete the 'double' (Tour of Jersey)
stmarys-complete-the-double

Many thanks to Mr Joseph Stanley of Southport (SMC 1960-1968), for sending in this, and other newspaper cutting from the 1960s as well as a selection of photographs from the same era)

Mr Stanley was also in the rugby team throughout those years, captaining the 2nd XV in the last two years. He was a substitute on this tour and St. Mary's won both of the matches they played.

OCR Transcript:

Youth XV 3 pts., St. Mary’s, Crosby, 26 pts.

AFTER a somewhat sluggish start, St, Mary’s College, Crosby, turned on another great display of attacking rugby and all-round versatility to beat the Jersey Youth XV at St. Peter yesterday afternoon by four goals and two tries (26 points) to a penalty goal (3 points)

The Jersey team was strengthened by having three  younger members of the Island club in their three-quarter line, but the game was really won and lost forward, where the home team only managed to get possession twice throughout the game from set pieces.

The lineouts were almost as one-sided. Jersey tried to knock the ball back while _the Saints drew it down befoer slipping it out.

Once again their scrum half P. Quirk was the outstanding St. Mary player, finding his outside half P. Aylward unerringly with a stream of beautifully controlled passes.

But it would perhaps be unfair on the rest of the visiting team to single out any one member for particular praise. Their effectiveness was in their teamwork and general understanding – they attacked together, defended together and thought together.

INTELLIGENT

Thomas Wright and Furness, guesting for the Jersey Youth team were committed to defence throughout the game and were never in position for a pass from which an attack could be launched. These three, however did more or less seal off the St. Mary attacks down the centre, but the Lancashire team soon realized this and switched their players intelligently.

The visitors were restricted to a try and a goal in the first half . Monaghan gave them the lead with a try in the corner following a blind side break by the scrum-half. Aylward crashed through for the second try, converted by Foster. Jersey’s three points were kicked by Bob Furness witha penalty from the 25 following a scrummaging infringement.

The first score of the second half was a penalty try awarded to the visitors when Quirk was brought down without the ball. Foster added the conversion points. Chabrel streaked through soon afterwards, and Quirk and Preston added tries before the whistle. Foster converted two of them.
