St. Mary’s College senior cross-country team were worthy winners of the much coveted Northern Schools’ cross country trophy. The championship meeting took place on Saturday, March 19, at Disley. The flve—mile course is said to be one of the most arduous in the country. Pictured from left to right are: J. Pugh, J. F. Fraine, D. Bell, Mr. J. E. Highton (P.E. master), S. Donavan and C. Cross Country
All four school Teams had an outstandingly successful season and splendid Captaincy was shown by Scott Donovan, who by his example, encouraged members of all teams to train hard and often.
The Seniors wont all their inter School fixtures and in addition they won the Sangster Cup, The Bolton Schools' Open Road Relay Cup and the Jack Fletcher Memorial Cup. They finished the season by winning the much coveted Northern Schools' Cross Country Trophy, against opposition from 105 schools from all parts of the country. This was the first time that the Trophy has been won by a school from this area since Cross Country came to the fore.
The U.l6. Team, though not quite achieving the fame and glory of the Senior Team, won all but two of their school fixtures and were runners up in the Memorial Cup and the Waterloo Harriers Road Race. In regaining the Booth Cup from St. Edward's we won the cup for the eight time since 1954. David Bell, the U. 16. Captain, became the dominant runner in races over five miles and in the Northern Schools Race was awarded the Roses Trophylyfor being the first Lancastrian runner home. This team forms 75% of the Crosby & District team who were second in the Lancashire Schools Championships.
The U. 14's were extremely strong and retained their unbeaten record for the second successive season. Under the inspiring captaincy of Edward Fearon they won the Jack Sharp Trophy and the Calday U. 14. Open Road Relay.
The U. 12's won all their fixtures bartwo, obtaining a tie with St. Edward’s at Sandfield Parkland losing by one point in the return. They gained second place in the Merseyside Schools U.12 Road Relay, being led home on most occasions by their captain Stephen Rogan.
