John F. Ash, aged 19, front Crosby (left) and Peter C. Fitzsimons, also 19, from Bootle, both pupils at St. Mary's College, Crosby, discuss their awards after the school's speech day, which was held in the Philharnionic Hall, Liverpool, yesterday afternoon. John, who is head boy, won the Jodrell (mathematics) Open Scholarship to Queen's College, Oxford, and the Fergus Gower Adams Cup for character, ability in studies and games. and Peter won the A. J. Murray Cup for practical musicianship.
