SCIENCE and the arts combined to provide a thrill for youngsters-and the not-so-young, too-at St. Mary’s College Christmas fayre on Saturday.
This was a breathtaking Dr. Who grotto, complete with scientific tableaux, space ships and a laboratory in full swing-but no Daleks, alas. The school’s science teachers arranged the technical side of the grotto; the art department did the backcloths, and the woodwork side of the school joined in to help with construction.
The Dr. Who grotto took up the length of a corridor, with exhibits behind windows on either side. At the end, fantasy gave way, to tradition-and there was Father Christmas, surrounded by diminutive fairies.
The fayre attracted large crowds, despite bad weather and the many stalls and sideshows had a rush of customers all afternoon. Crosby’s M.P., Mr. R. Graham Page, and Mrs. Page made a welcome, though short, visit, and shopped at various stalls.
After tearing themselves away from Dr. Who, youngsters found another attraction in half- hourly film shows at the college “cinema”.
The fayre was the culmination of a years activities for the St. Mary’s College Development Fund Ladies’ Committee: chairman. Mrs. E. Coyne, secretary. Mrs. N. Ferrigno; treasurer, Mrs. M. Whyte; and the overall income which they are to give to college funds is more than £1,250.
The committee’s thanks go to parents and friends for their support of the Christmas fayre and other events and to the college staff and boys for their cooperation.
