ST. MARY'S COLLEGE SPORTS
A CROWD many hundreds strong was at Chesterfield Road last Saturday to see the annual sports of St. Mary's College, Crosby. Ideal weather conditions prevailed and excellent 'staff" work ensured that the lengthy programme of events was run off without a hitch.
As usual, in events of this type, the mile (open) race aroused considerable interest and excitement. J. J. Kirby won-in a thrilling finish. The Victor Ludorum (senior) cup was gained by H. Parr and the junior cup by A. Kerr.
A feature of the sports was the march past by the entire school, every pupil being in white flannels and shirt. To a march played by St. Edward's Silver Prize Band, which had given selections of music during the afternoon, the hundreds of boys made a fine sight. The parade was divided into the various school houses, each house being preceded by its coluars.
Alderman S. Chaffers, Deputy Mayor, who was deputising for the Mayor of Crosby (Alderman Miss F. Rollo), away in the South of England, presented the senior prizes, and Mrs. Chaffers, the junior prizes.
The head master, the Rev. Br. J. B. Thompson, MA., in welcoming the civic guests, said he always liked Alderman and Mrs. Chaffers at the college events. They do things in such a happy way," he said. He went on to express his thanks to all who had helped to make the day such a success, particularly the parents, who had donated prizes and had given help of all kinds, and the staff, who had worked very hard on sports day-and previously.
Alderman Chaffers said it was always a pleasure to him to watch the boys putting all they knew into their efforts on sports day. He hoped that as the years passed by, those who had been unsuccessful would return and hold their own against the older scholars of the school.
A vote of thanks to Alderman and Mrs. Chaffers, on behalf of the school, was accorded
by Mr. E. Lawler.
