NEWS OF OLD BOYS
PETER DARBY is to be heartily congratulated on winning a Crabtree Exhibition to St. Catharine's College, Cambridge-he holds already a Lancashire County Major Scholarship. The following extract from the letter telling him of the award is of interest: "Crabtree Exhibitions are of full open award standard and are available for State Supplementation. They are awarded to those who, although coming below the open Exhibitions to whom our financial resources allow awards to be made, are considered by the College to have displayed outstanding qualities of personality and leadership." A well deserved award.
ARTHUR MUNITIZ won an Open Scholarship into King's College, Cambridge. Arthur had qualified previously for a Lancashire County Major Scholarship. He will take economics and languages when he goes up in October.
JOSEPH MUNITIZ brother of Arthur, who at the age of fifteen, at St. Mary's, qualified for a Lancashire County Major Scholarship and who could have been a State Scholar on the results of his previous examination in July, 1947, is at present studying for the priesthood in Spain.
RAYMOND V. MIJRPHY – H.A. Field Security, Trieste, has received word that he will be admitted to Peterhouse, Cambridge, on leaving the Forces. When Raymond wrote, in November last, he was reading deeply and steadily. He had just then emerged from Volume I Tolstoy's "War and Peace." Perseverance brings the prize. Raymond was very active on the magazine staff till he left St. Mary's for service.
ANTHONY WILLIAMS 18 in the Merchant Navy, serving to become a deck-officer. He is at present on the high seas, somewhere between Australia and Cape Town.
WILLIAM McCANN is a popular and successful teacher on the staff of St. Mary's. Last March he married Miss Olwen Evans of Southport. Mrs. McCann came to the Garden Festival in June, and let us see how happy his choice has been!!
REGINALD McINNE5, chairman of the Old Boys' Association, goes from success to success in his profession of the law. He is in great demand in difficult cases, yet he makes time to preside over and guide the Association on the wisest lines.
RAYMOND BOGGIANO from Hull University College, where he had a distinguished career was appointed Senior Teacher of French in St. Mary's, last September. He spares no pains in the advancement of his pupils, yet, like many other members of St. Mary's happy and efficient staff, he puts in long hours in his capacity of officer in the College Combined Force.
MICHAEL DONOVAN after a brilliant career at Downing College, Cambridge, has joined the staff of St. Mary's, as Senior Master of English. He has taken up the mantle of Rev. Br. Robinson. May his Scholarship winners be as many. He is an officer in the College C.C.F.
RAYMOND LEE, so distinguished at sport when at St. Mary's is hitting up the scores for Bootle Cricket Club. He also plays in the 1st XV Liverpool Rugby Football Club.
H. W. LAHY in the midst of his music studies at Manchester University, was called to the services, obtained distinctions in his Higher School Music Papers. We expect great things from him when he resumes at Manchester.
JOSEPH CAREY came to our Sports on July 2nd. Joseph blazed the trail for University Scholarship winners at St. Mary's. Many have followed the trail since. Junior Scholarship awards at Hull are the most recent successes of the kind.
JOHN MCELROY is teaching in Star of the Sea School, Seaforth, where be proves his effectiveness and fulfils the promise of his school-days at St. Mary's. Amongst that remarkable drama group-the St. Helen's Players-he is outstanding. He is usually cast for an important part and quite visibly holds the audience by his characterisations.
CHARLES MONAGHAN was quite busy at the Sports, helping Reginald Mclnnes to count the piles of cash coming in from the refreshment centres. It was a busman's holiday for him counting cash in Bank as cashier is his daily occupation. He has two fine sons at the College. We were pleased to see again, in perfect health, after her serious illness, his little daughter, Kathie.
IAN DOYLE is Assistant Chairman at Downing College, where he has had a brilliant career, graduating with Firsts in both parts of his Tripos. He is at present engaged on his thesis for his Ph.D. degree. His integrity of character as a Catholic, and his profound scholarship have made the name of St. Mary's highly respected at Downing, where he was our first pupil to win an open Scholarship to Cambridge.
JOHN CARTMAN is in the services. We were pleased to obtain from him his Oxford letter. One of the youngest to win a State Scholarship, a brilliant career is promised for him when he resumes at Balliol.
JOHN CAIN has brought much honour to his School by his prowess at Rugby. He has played for Waterloo and Lancashire County consistently. The selectors picked him for an English Trial match two seasons ago. Recently he has been elected vice-captain of Waterloo Rugby Club.
RICHARD SMITH we were pleased to meet at the Sports. He is on the staff of St. Anselm's College, Birkenhead. Victor Ludorum at the first Annual Sports of St. Mary's, he was in a position to measure the development of athletics at the College.
DONALD LAWLER we are glad to learn, is doing well at Liverpool University. He passed his second L.D.S. in March last.
BRIAN MULLEN, now the Rev. B. Mullen, obtained his Doctorate in Canon Law at Marynorth recently.
DOUGLAS LASCELLES, a prominent figure in Catholic circles in Cambridge, gained the first part of his English Tripos. Of all news we hear from the Universities, we like best to hear that our Old Boys are taking an active part in the Catholic life of their College.
FREDERICK SLADE in his second year on the staff of St. Mary's, has been making history at the Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, by his Speech Day Choirs. Never has better balanced singing been heard at the Philharmonic Hall. His magic baton and its power over his choir of three hundred harmonised voices made the huge audience marvel. COLUMNIST.
OLD Boys. Let Columnist see you, or hear from you, and the good news will he spread among your friends.
