Bishop John Rawsthorne was born in Crosby, in November 1936, was educated at St Peter and St Paul's Primary School, Crosby and at St Mary's College, Crosby before training for the priesthood at St Joseph's College, Upholland. Bishop Rawsthorne was ordained to the priesthood by the then Archbishop of Liverpool, in June 1962. In 1967 he began work with the National Catholic Missionary Society in London. In November 1981 he was appointed titular Bishop of Rotdon and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Liverpool. He was ordained Bishop on 16 December 1981. In 1997 John Rawsthorne became Bishop of Hallam (Sheffield).
